Chapter 10

By the time Tony and I had returned to our suite, I was frozen through and through. Luckily, someone had thought to come in and light the fire, and there was plenty of hot water for a long, hot shower. When we’d walked through the common area, I could see that the group still in residence at the castle had started to gather in the parlor, so I supposed that once we got dried off and warmed up, Tony and I would join them. Perhaps one of the other guests knew something or had observed something that Tony and I weren’t yet aware of.

“Ritchie texted me while you were in the shower,” Tony informed me. “Our assumption that the police won’t be able to make it out until after the storm lets up was accurate. It seems that the bridge you were worried about being washed out has, in fact, washed out.”

I took a towel to my wet hair. “I have to say that this is a situation where I’d preferred to have been wrong. Did Ritchie have any sort of a timeline as to when access would be reestablished?”

Tony shook his head. “He just said that the woman he spoke to warned him that the storm had done a lot of damage to all the roads and bridges in the area and that the best thing we could do at this point was to be patient.”

“Do you think Maverick is here in the castle?” I asked.

Tony’s brow furrowed. “I’m not sure.”

“Do you think he killed Easton?”

“Again, I’m unsure. While Maverick is still the main suspect in my mind, I think it’s possible that any number of people had the opportunity to have killed him, and we don’t know anyone well enough to establish a motive.”

“Maybe we should start a list. Make some notes. It sounds like we’re on our own with this one, and I, for one, know I’d feel better if we could start eliminating folks.”

“It’ll be hard to eliminate anyone since we don’t have a specific time of death,” Tony pointed out. “If we could narrow down the timeline a bit, then chatting with folks and trying to figure out where everyone was during the death window will provide us with some useful data, but short of that, I’m just not sure what we can do.”

“Since we don’t have the time of death, we’ll need to focus on a motive. Maybe if we do some digging, we’ll find something that isn’t readily apparent.” I reached down to scratch Tilly behind the ear. “Do you think we should email my dad? Confirm that we found what he sent us after and ask if he knows anything that can help us.”

“We can try,” Tony agreed. “But I wouldn’t count on hearing from him.”

“Yeah,” I sighed. “I know. Let’s message Dad anyway.”

By the time Tony and I made it down to the parlor, almost everyone had gathered, including several staff members. I guessed Ritchie had promised to show up
